Session Volume Profile (Ticks)
Volume profile for each trading session, and optionally for the day, week or month, built from individual trades, with point of control, value area and session high and low.
What you see
For every Asia, London and New York session in view, a horizontal histogram that starts at the session's first candle: each row shows the volume traded at that price, and the row with the most volume spans the visible part of the session. Rows inside the value area use the session color, rows outside it the same color at half opacity. Labelled lines mark the POC, VAH, VAL and the session's High and Low.
With Show Daily, Weekly or Monthly Profile on, one more profile (UTC day, UTC week from Monday, or UTC month) appears at the left edge of the chart, 100 pixels wide and labelled with its dates. If several are on, you see the one whose period ends closest to the right edge of the view.
How it is calculated
A volume profile sorts traded volume by price instead of by time. ChartRider builds it from the individual trades (ticks) of each period, not from candles: every trade's size is added to the row of its price.
- Rows: in Pixel mode the price step is chosen so that a row is about
Pixel or Tickspixels high, rounded to 1, 2 or 5 × 10ⁿ tick sizes, so rows regroup when you zoom. In Ticks mode every row covers exactly that many tick sizes. - POC (point of control): the row with the most volume.
- Value area: starting at the POC, the neighbouring row above or below with more volume is added, one at a time, until the area holds
Value Area (%)of the profile's volume. VAH and VAL are its top and bottom rows. - Sessions: Asia 00:00 to 08:00 UTC, London 08:00 to 13:00 UTC, New York 14:30 to 21:00 UTC; in summer time London (European dates) and New York (US dates) are one hour earlier. Trades between sessions only count toward the daily, weekly and monthly profiles.
The profile of the running session updates with live trades; in replay, profiles only contain trades up to the replay time. The profile needs recorded trades for the market and only loads when you are signed in.
How to read it
- The POC is the price the session traded most; price often returns to it.
- Inside the value area the market is in balance. Several closes beyond VAH or VAL suggest a move toward new value.
- High-volume rows act as support and resistance; thin rows were crossed quickly and are often crossed quickly again.
- The previous session's POC, VAH and VAL are common reference levels for the next one.
Using it in strategies
The profile is a visual tool without outputs, so it is not available in the Trade Setup or through use indicator in WickScript.
