# Average True Range Moving (ATRM)

> ATR in percent of the close, rescaled to 0 to 1 over a rolling window: 1 is the highest relative volatility of the window, 0 the lowest.

## What you see
A line in its own pane with values between 0 and 1. The pane scales to the lowest and highest value of the visible candles.

## How it is calculated
1. ATR with Wilder smoothing over `ATR Period` candles, exactly as in the [ATR](https://chartrider.com/docs/indicators/atr/).
2. Relative ATR: `ATR / close`. As a share of the price, it is comparable across price levels.
3. Rolling min-max scaling over the last M relative ATR values (M = `ATR Moving Window Period Size`, current value included): `value = (relative ATR − minimum) / (maximum − minimum)`. If all values in the window are equal, the value is 0.

At the start of the loaded data the window holds fewer than M values.

## How to read it
- Near 1: volatility is at the top of its recent range. This is expansion, typical for strong moves and news.
- Near 0: volatility is at the bottom of its recent range. This is contraction, which often comes before a breakout.
- Because the line is scaled to its own history, the same thresholds work across markets and timeframes, unlike the raw ATR.
- The scale is relative to the window: a reading of 1 after a quiet stretch can still be a small move in absolute terms.

## Using it in strategies
Output: `value` (0 to 1). In the [Trade Setup](https://chartrider.com/docs/strategies/trade-setup/), "Range" limits trading to normal conditions (e.g. 0.2 to 0.8), "Compare" picks expansion phases (e.g. `value` above 0.7). [WickScript](https://chartrider.com/docs/wickscript/) has no built-in function for it; use `use indicator "ATRM" with period 14, periodMovingWindow 120 as av` and read `av.value`.

## Settings

Open the settings with the slider icon next to the indicator (Indicators, `F3`). Numeric settings can be swept as Step 1 / Step 2 parameters when you run a strategy.

| ATR Period | Number | `14` | Period of the underlying ATR (Wilder smoothing). (min 1) |
| ATR Moving Window Period Size | Number | `120` | Number of recent relative ATR values (M) whose minimum and maximum define 0 and 1. A larger window compares with a longer history. (min 1) |
| Height | Number | `30` | Height of the pane in pixels. (min 30) |

## Outputs

These values can be used in Trade Setup triggers, filters and exits (see [Trade Setup](https://chartrider.com/docs/strategies/trade-setup/)) and in WickScript.

## Use in WickScript

`use indicator` creates this indicator inside a script, with settings by their ID. Each output is a field of the name after `as`. See [WickScript indicators](https://chartrider.com/docs/wickscript/indicators/).

```wickscript
wickscript 1
indicator "Average True Range Moving (ATRM) from the list" in pane
use indicator "ATRM" with period 14 as myAtrm
show myAtrm.value as line "value"
```
